Psalm 85

Psalm 85

Author: the sons of Korah

Verse 1 – Lord, You have been favorable to Your land; You have brought back the captivity of Jacob.

Verse 2 – You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all sin. Selah

Verse 3 – You have taken away all Your wrath; You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.

Verse 4 – Restore us, O God of our salvation, and cause Your anger toward us to cease.

The first 3 verses already say the Lord had forgiven, brought back, covered all sin, and taken away all His wrath, so why does the psalmist now ask for restoration and to take His wrath away? I’m not real sure on that, but He acknowledged God’s wrath could come again.

Verse 5 – Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?

Verse 6 – Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?

Verse 7 – Show us Your mercy, O Lord, and grant us Your salvation.

When God shows His mercy and pours His love on His people, it revives them. Sometimes we will go through dry periods in our Christian lives, that feels like we are just “spinning our wheels.” That’s when we need to pray in the Spirit until there is a refreshing. You will know in “your know-er.”

verse 8 – I will hear what God the Lord will speak, for He will speak peace. To His people and to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly.

When we are quiet, we will hear the Lord speak to us. For me, His voice is gentle, soft, and always loving. He speaks encouragement to my soul and let’s me know, “this too shall pass.”

Verse 9 – Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land.

Verse 10 – Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Reconciliation is characterized by the renewal and return of peace and prosperity to the land.

Verse 11 – Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

Verse 12 – Yes, the Lord will give what is good; and our land will yield its increase.

Verse 13 – Righteousness will go before Him, and shall make His footsteps our pathway.

Jesus Christ is our righteousness, apart from Him we haven’t any. Stay connected to Him and He will guide our paths through life.
