Psalm 120

Psalm 120

Author: Anonymous – some suggest Hezekiah

This is prayer for deliverance from false accusations.

Verse 1 – In my distress I cried to the Lord, and He heard me.

Verse 2 – Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.

Verse 3 – What shall be given to you, or what shall be done to you, you false tongue?

Verse 4 – Sharp arrows of the warrior, with coals of the broom tree!

A deceitful tongue and a lying tongue could mean vicious gossip, baseless rumors. The broom tree is a desert bush, shrub. It is found in ravines and rocky places, on hillsides and even in open sand stretches of deserts. Found in the Judean wilderness.

Verse 5 – Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kadar!

Meshech was located southwest of the Black Sea. Kadar was located on the northern fringe of the Syrian – Arabian desert. It was normally inhabited by Arab tribes. It was far to the north of Israel. both of these places were known for being warlike and barbarian. Evidently, the psalmist had ended up in one of these two places.

Verse 6 – My soul has dwelt too long with one who hates peace.

Verse 7 – I am for peace, but when I spoke, they are for war.

There are tribes and religions in this day and time who want nothing but killing and destruction. Their goal is to kill as many innocent people, including themselves, as possible. All the wars fought in past history were horrible enough, but today countries fight a terrorism of ideology, and that’s because they don’t know the One True God!
