Ecclesiastes – Chapter 3

Verse 1 – To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven:

These verses must be read in the context that; we are mortals; we all die; and that our work dies when we do, with the exception of the things that are eternal. We live in time, and each season of life will pass and a new season will begin.

Verse 2 – A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what was planted;

Verse 3 – A time to kill, a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

Verse 4 – A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

Verse 5 – A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

Verse 6 – A time to gain, a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;

Verse 7 – A time to tear, a time to sew; a time to keep silent , and a time to speak;

Verse 8 – A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war and a time of peace.

What things are we as Christians allowed to hate? We hate sin but we don’t hate the person. (I hate snakes!)

Verse 9 – What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?

Verse 10 – I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied.

Verse 11 – He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

God placed that yearning for eternity in our hearts. He has given us a glimpse of heaven through His Word.

Verse 12 – I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,

God wants us to enjoy what He has given us. Our joy will be determined by our perspective on life. Those who put their trust in Christ can know that every good thing comes from Him.

Verse 13 – And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of his labor-it is the gift of God.

Verse 14 – I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him.

Life has no meaning unless God is in your life. To fear Him is to worship Him. Why? Because He is worthy. He is the creator of all the earth, including you and I. When we put Him first in our lives, our purpose will become clear.

Verse 15 – That which is has already been, and what is to be has already been and God requires an account of what is past.

There is a connection of events –  past, present, and future-and that this connection exists in the justice of God All Mighty who controls it all.

Verse 16 – Moreover I saw under the sun: In the place of judgment, wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, iniquity was there.

Verse 17 – I said in my heart, “God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, for there shall be a time there for every purpose and for every work.”

There will come a time when the believers works will be tested with fire – that which is for the kingdom will remain; that which was done for selfish motives, will be burned up. However, the works of the un-saved, were all done in vain.

Verse 18 – I said in my heart, “Concerning the estate of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like beasts.”

Verse 19 – For what happens to the sons of men also happens to beasts; one thing falls them; as one dies, so dies the other. Surely they all have one breath; man has no advantage over beasts, for all is vanity.

Verse 20 – All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all return to dust.

Verse 21 – Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the beasts, which goes down to the earth?

Verse 22 – So I perceived that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

Our physical bodies can’t live forever, so we return to the dust as the animals do. But God has given people the hope of eternity. Because man has eternity set in his heart, we all have a unique purpose in God’s overall plan. Yet we cannot discover God’s purpose for our lives through our own efforts, only through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

When you become born-again, the Holy Spirit will come upon you and lead you into all truth!
