This is the only place in the Bible where a Gentile ruler is said to be anointed. God is the power over all powers, and uses and anoints whom He chooses for special tasks. This section of scripture was written 140 years before it was fulfilled.
Verse 1 – “Thus says the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held – to subdue nations before him and loose the armor of kings, to open before him the double doors, so the gates will not be shut:
Verse 2 – ‘I will go before you and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron.
God will cause the strong defenses of enemy cities to fall before Cyrus. He will level the uneven places to speed up the attack.
Verse 3 – I will give you treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places. That you may know that I, the Lord, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel.
As Cyrus defeated the Medes, the Lydians, and the Babylonians, their wealth would come into his possession.
Verse 4 – For Jacob My servant’s sake, and Israel My elect, I have even called you by your name; I have named you, though you have not known Me.
Verse 5 – I am the Lord, and there is no other; there is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me,
Verse 6 – that they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is none besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other;
Verse 7 – I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.
Did you catch that in verse 7? God makes peace and “creates calamity.” Everything our God does, has a purpose. We all have times of peace in our lives and times of trouble. The Bible tells us it rains on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45). So don’t think it strange when “All hell breaks loose!” James tells us to count it all joy when we fall into trials. It is a testing of our faith. Think of it this way: after a time of testing and you have been purified, what comes out?: A jewel! Always remember – pressure produces a diamond! If you have had pressure on you for an extended period of time, that just means God is going to use you in a mighty way to change others lives for His Kingdom!
Verse 8 – “Rain down, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness; let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together. I, the Lord have created it.
Verse 9 – “Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making? “Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’?
This refers to those who would argue with God for using a pagan king like Cyrus to accomplish His purpose. (A potsherd is a broken piece of pottery, essentially worthless.)
Verse 10 – Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’ Or to a woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ ”
A baby does not question its birth, any more than a pot questions its creator. So in other words: Why should Israel question God’s plan?
Verse 11 – Thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: “Ask Me of things to come concerning My sons; and concerning the work of My hands, you command Me.
Verse 12 – I have made the earth, and created man on it. It was I – My hands that stretched out the heavens and all their host I have commanded.
Verse 13 – I have raised up in righteousness and I will direct all his ways; he shall build My city and let My exiles go free, not for price or reward,” says the Lord of hosts.
King Cyrus, in Ezra chapters 1-13, decreed to let the Jews go back to Jerusalem and also gave them the money and resources to rebuild their temple.
Verse 14 – Thus says the Lord: “The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over to you, and they shall be yours; they shall walk behind you, they shall come over in chains; and they shall bow down to you. They will make supplication to you, saying, ‘Surely God is in you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’ ”
Egypt, and Cush (Ethiopia) and the Sabeans were foreign nations and would one day recognize that the God of the Israelites is the One True God.
Verse 15 – Truly You are God, who hide Yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior!
Verse 16 – They shall be ashamed and also disgraced, all of them; they shall go in confusion together, who are maker of idols.
Verse 17 – But Israel shall be saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation; you shall not be ashamed or disgraced forever and ever.
Verse 18 – For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it in vain, who formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord, and there is no other.
Verse 19 – I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth; I did not say to the seed of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in vain’; I, the Lord, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
The promises of God are sure. He created us for a relationship with Him. If you are born again, you are the seed of Jacob, and Abraham. How could we ever doubt such a magnificent God?
Verse 20 – “Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations. They have no knowledge, who carry the wood of their carved image, and pray to a god that cannot save.
Verse 21 – Tell and bring forth your case; yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me, a just God and a Savior; there is none besides Me.
Verse 22 – “Look at Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
God’s salvation is for all nations. He says look to Him. Too many think that their good works can bring salvation, not so. That is why Christ had to come and make the final sacrifice for man – kind’s sin, because we could never work hard enough or be good enough. No other religion that has been created by man can save our soul. Only God through His precious Son and His blood, Jesus Christ, can do that!
Verse 23 – I have sworn to Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.
Verse 24 – He shall say, surely in the Lord I have righteousness and strength. To Him men shall come, and all shall be ashamed who are incensed against Him.
Verse 25 – In the Lord all the descendants of Israel shall be justified, and shall glory.’ ”
Through Israel, the Jews, God’s chosen people, came the gospel through Jesus Christ. If you are a Christian, you have been grafted into this family. In 2 Corinthians 5:21, the Apostle Paul explains how we become righteous – (verse 21) for He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (Christ). So please, if you are one of those people who like to say your righteousness is as filthy rags, stop it. That has been pounded into people’s heads for centuries, trying to make people think it makes them sound humble. It does not! It makes them sound like they don’t know the word of God.
Look what Romans 10:9 and 10 says – (9) that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (verse 10 ) For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to Salvation.
