Jeremiah – Chapter 8

jeremiah-chapter-8

Verse 1 – “At that time,” says the Lord, “they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of its princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves.

Verse 2 – “They shall spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and which they have served and after which they have walked, which they have sought and which they have worshiped. They shall not be gathered nor burned; they shall be like refuse on the face of the earth.

The time was coming when all the people that had been buried in Judah were going to be exhumed. These people highly honored their dead, so this was unimaginable. This would be an ironic punishment for idol worshipers.

Verse 3 – “Then death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of those who remain of this evil family, who remain in all the places where I have driven them,” says the Lord of hosts.

Verse 4 – “Moreover you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Will they fall and not rise? Will one turn away and not return?

Verse 5 – Why has this people slidden back, Jerusalem, in a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit, they refuse to return.

Verse 6 – I listened and heard, but they did not speak aright. No man repented of his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turned to his own course, as the horse rushes into battle.

The normal thing to do when a person falls down or makes mistakes, is to get back up and go in another direction, Judah didn’t. Why? Because they wouldn’t admit that they were sinning. They continued to do all the things that were against God. When a person continues to deceive themselves about their sin, they will pay a heavy consequence, and Judah paid it.

Verse 7 – “Even the stork in the heavens know their appointed times; and the turtle-dove, the swift, and the swallow observe the time of their coming, but My people do not know the judgement of the Lord.

These birds instinctively obey the laws of nature set by their Creator. They know when to migrate. This was in contrast to God’s people knowing disaster was coming and chose to ignore it!

Verse 8 – “How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us’? Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood.

Verse 9 – The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord; so what wisdom do they have?

The people thought their mere possession of the law of God was all they needed to make them right with Him. But they had falsified its intention. God’s word had been twisted into covering for corruption.

Verse 10 – “Therefore I will give their wives to others, and their fields to those who will inherit them; because from the lest even to the greatest everyone is given to covetousness; from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.

Verse 11 – For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.

Verse 12 – Were they ashamed when they had committed abominations? No! They were not at all ashamed, nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; in the time of their punishment they shall be cast down,” says the Lord.

People who are not ashamed of their sin will not humble themselves, because they don’t think they have offended anyone. They don’t care even if they have. When we come to God All Mighty for forgiveness, we have to want it! We have to humble ourselves, receive, and God changes the spirit to a new spirit, His Spirit. Judah didn’t want to change.

Verse 13 – “I will surely consume them,” says the Lord. “There shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things I have given them shall pass away from them.” ‘ ”

Verse 14 – “Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter the fortified cities, and let us be silent there. For the Lord God has put us to silence and given us water of gall to drink. Because we have sinned against the Lord.

Verse 15 – “We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and there was trouble!

Verse 16 – The snorting of His horses was heard from Dan. The whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of His strong ones; for they have come and devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell in it.”

Verse 17 – “For behold, I will send serpents among you, vipers which cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you,” says the Lord.

The battle metaphors change from the speed of horses to the terror of snakes biting the people. There will be no escape.

Verse 18 – I would comfort myself in sorrow; my heart is faint in me.

Verse 19 – Listen! The voice, the cry of the daughter of my people from a far country: “Is this not the Lord of Zion? Is not her King in her?” “Why have they provoked Me to anger with their carved images, and with foreign idols?”

Verse 20 – “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!”

Have you put off coming to the Lord? Do you ever think you have done too much for Him to forgive you? That’s not true. He says His grace is bigger than any sin you have committed. Don’t put it off, He loves you and wants a relationship with you to bless you and show you things you have never imagined!

Verse 21 – For the hurt of the daughter of my people I am hurt. I am mourning; astonishment has taken hold of me.

Verse 22 – Is there no balm in Gilead, is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery for the health of the daughter of my people?

Do people not reject the same God today? How can people continue to tell their Creator that gives them breath, no, to His goodness? It’s because of the hardness of their heart. Do you want your heart softened to the point of accepting all that God has for you? God’s a good God; gave His only begotten Son to make you a new person. All sin can be forgiven; your past is forgotten; you can be washed in the blood that was shed for you to be set free. Love kept our Christ on that cross because “You” were on His heart. Our Creator loves us more than we will ever know and only wants the very best for each of our lives, so if you don’t know Him, He’s waiting. Choose life through Jesus Christ today!
