Ezekiel – Chapter 15

Verse 1 – Then the word of he Lord came to me, saying,

Verse 2 – “Son of man, how is the wood of the vine better than any other wood, the vine branch which is among the trees of the forest?

Israel is compared to a vine, which when fruitless, is utterly unprofitable. One branch of a tree in the forest is of more use than the whole vine.

Verse 3 – “Is wood taken from it to make any object? Or can men make a peg from it to hang any vessel on?

Verse 4 – “Instead, it is thrown into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both ends of it, and its middle is burned. Is it useful for any work?

Verse 5 – “Indeed, when it was whole, no object could be made from it. How much less will it be useful for any work when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned?

Verse 6 – “Therefore thus says the Lord God: ‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give up the inhabitants of Jerusalem;

The vine is an image of Israel and appears as a symbol of the richness of Canaan, the land promised to Israel. The vine is the image of God’s loving care for the nation as a vine-dresser, taking care of what He had planted. Its clear from Matthew 21:33-41 that God desires fruit (good works) from His vine. The Babylonian invasion was accompanied by burning Jerusalem to the ground. Fire will be a prominent feature of the great tribulation also (Revelation 14:18).

Verse 7 – ‘And I will set My face against them. They will go out from one fire, but another fire shall devour them. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I set My face against them.

Verse 8 – ‘Thus I will make the land desolate, because they have persisted in unfaithfulness,’ says the Lord God.”

Thinking about how far Israel had gone astray, makes me think of how far our nation has strayed. In my life-time alone, I remember when children had respect for their elders, teachers, pastors, and those in uniform. Now, we live in a time of no shame for anything; lying, stealing, breaking the law in all areas; setting up factories to kill babies and calling them “Women’s Health Centers,” to just name a few things that have changed. They can call war on anything or any group they choose and then call themselves the victim. Is the US not also headed for God’s judgment?
