Luke – Chapter 12

Christ Warns About Hypocrisy

Verse 1 – In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Verse 2 – “For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.

In the New Testament, yeast is normally a symbol of corruption or evil. Hypocrisy behavior can fool man, but it will eventually be uncovered and made known by God, who is never fooled. I call them “pretenders.” Pretending to be something they are not. They usually expose themselves by what comes out of their mouth.

Verse 3 – “Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

Verse 4 – “And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

Verse 5 – “But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!

I believe there is less fear of God these days than any other time in history. People do exactly what they want to do to others without any remorse or fear of the consequences. They just don’t care. They make fun of there being an actual hell, and they make fun of the ones who do believe.

Verse 6 – “Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God.

Verse 7 – “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Does anyone know the exact number of hairs on your head? God does, so don’t ever underestimate how much He loves you. You are valuable to Him!

Verse 8 – “Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God.

Verse 9 – “But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

How do people deny Christ before men? (1) by hoping no one will think they are a Christian, so that they can fit in with the crowd; (2) by not speaking up for what is right; (3) by being silent about your relationship with God; (4) and by accepting the worldly values and principles. Never, ever, be ashamed of being a Christian, and Jesus will never, ever be ashamed of you!

Verse 10 – “And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemies against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.

According to the parallel passage in Mark 3:28-30, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is to attribute to Satan the works of God’s Spirit. This is deliberate and ongoing rejection of the Holy Spirit’s work; and if you reject the Holy Spirit’s work, you reject God. This cannot be forgiven.

Verse 11 – “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say.

Verse 12 – “For the Holy spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The promise of the Holy Spirit’s help does not compensate for lack of preparation. In time of need, God will bring His truths to mind, when you know His word. However, He can’t bring anything to mind if you haven’t studied His word in the first place.

Parable of the Rich Fool

Verse 13 – Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

Verse 14 – But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

Verse 15 – And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

Verse 16 – Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of  a certain rich man yielded plentifully.

Verse 17 – “And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’

This story is about to show us what greed and covetousness is.

Verse 18 – “So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.

Verse 19 – ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ‘

Verse 20 -“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will these things be which you have provided?

Verse 21 – “So is he who lays up treasures for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

None of us knows whether we will see tomorrow. Wouldn’t it be more practical to spend more time concentrating on where we are going to spend eternity, then gathering wealth to leave behind?

Seek The Kingdom of God

Verse 22 – And He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what yo will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.

Verse 23 – “Life is more than food and the body is more than clothing.

Verse 24 – “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn, and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

Verse 25 – “And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

Verse 26 – “If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?

Can we change anything by worrying or being anxious? Jesus is plainly telling His disciples life is so much more than what we eat and what we wear, so quit worrying about small things that they will be provided for. We are to keep our mind stayed on Jesus and He will keep us in perfect peace. Take all your concerns to Him in prayer.

Verse 27 – Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of the these.

Verse 28 – “If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?

Do you see what worrying and anxiety really is? It is a lack of faith in our Creator who promises to provide our every need. Do we trust that His words concerning us is really true? When He says He will supply our needs, He means it! When you doubt, you’ll go without!

Verse 29 – “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind.

Verse 30 – “For all things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things.

Verse 31 – “But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.

Part of seeking God’s kingdom is striving to live by His standards and principles. Christ in a believer’s life, should always be “center focused.” We don’t play around in some areas and then rigid in others.

Years ago, I asked God to show me exactly what it meant to, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these other things will be added unto you. And He did. Attitudes and behaviors had to change towards a lot of areas. We are willing to compromise in too many ares, and that’s not the way it should be. We don’t pick and choose which part of scripture we like and don’t like. When a believer starts to take this Christian walk seriously, “all these other things will be added unto us.”

Verse 32 – “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

It’s foolish not to look for the small things at the hand which freely gives us the greater things.

Verse 33 – “Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail where no thief approaches nor moth destroys.

If our financial goals and possessions hinder us from giving generously, loving others, or serving God, sell what yo must to bring your life into perspective. Wealth on this earth can be stolen or destroyed, but heavenly treasures are eternal secure. Mercy and compassion are matters of the heart.

Verse 34 – “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We have to start with being honest with ourselves: Are you stingy when it comes to giving to the less fortification? Do you see others needs and are willing to do what you can to help?

James 4:17 – Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Verse 35 – “Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning;

Verse 36 – “and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately.

Verse 37 – “Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them.

Verse 38 – “And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

Verse 39 – “But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed the house to be broken into.

Verse 40 – “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Are you longing for the return of Christ? Will He find you about the Father’s business, or will He catch you off-guard, concerned with only your life and your agenda?

Verse 41 – Then Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?”

Verse 42 – And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

Verse 43 – “Blessed is that servant whom the master will find so doing when he comes.

Verse 44 – “Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all he has.

Jesus doesn’t answer Peter’s question directly. Instead He says that the ones that He finds faithful will be ruler over all that he has.

Verse 45 – “But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants, and to eat and drink and be drunk,

Verse 46 – “the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

I believe this is a message for backsliders. Beware of making fun of those who are diligently serving the Lord, as the backslider falls away. They will have their place with the unbelievers.

Verse 47 – “And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

Verse 48 – “But he who did not know, yet committed things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For to everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

The more understanding we have, the more we are responsible for to use effectively for the kingdom. We are not responsible for what we don’t know, but it is our responsibility to seek it out. God expects all His children to learn, study, and seek His will and be obedient to it. When you start getting revelation on the things in scripture, more will be given. It is your responsibility to read scripture and find out what it says and then do it. So please don’t try to convince another that you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and you never go to church or pick up His Word.

The Cost of Discipleship

Verse 49 – “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

Verse 50 – “But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!

Verse 512 – “Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division.

Verse 52 – “From now on five in one house will be divided: three against two and two against three.

Verse 53 – “Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother in-law.”

Jesus tells His disciples and those listening, “You will go through fiery trials when you become a disciple of Mine.” People will persecute and mock you for your faith. Then Jesus talks about His agony and suffering He calls “His baptism,” because He will be emerged in the world’s sin upon Himself. Then He goes on to tell them that when they become disciples of His, there will be division. There will be some that stand with you and some who will come against because of your faith. It’s not an easy road to walk, but Christianity is the only choice we have if we want an eternity with Jesus. Christ is bigger than anything or anyone that comes against His child. What are we willing to sacrifice to gain eternal life? Sometimes it’s our family.

Verse 54 – Then He said to the multitudes, “When you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is.

Verse 55 – “And when you  see the south wind blow you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is.

Verse 56 – “Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time?

Verse 57 – “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right?

Verse 58 – “When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

Verse 59 – “I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

Just as the multitude Jesus was talking to knew how to tell when rain was approaching or when it was going to be hot, so do we today. But people then didn’t recognize that the Savior of the world had come among them. So is it today; we can predict hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding, and many disasters, but too many are ignoring the “signs of the times.” Jesus is coming back soon and there will still be people who haven’t prepared for that day.
