Verse 1 – When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
Verse 2 – And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.
The singing, praising, worshiping, all stop, and heaven is dead silent in anticipation of what is about to happen. These seven angels might be archangels. We only know of two, Michael and Gabriel.
Verse 3 – Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. And he was given much incense that he could offer it with prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
This golden censer is similar to the one used in the Old Testament (Exodus 30:7-9). It contained charcoal that was hot and the incense was poured on the coals, and the sweet-smelling smoke drifted upwards, symbolizing believers prayers ascending to God.
Verse 4 – And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angels’ hand.
These prayers of the saints very well could be the prayers for the saints that are still on the earth during the Tribulation Period. Keep in mind, all of heaven is watching.
Verse 5 – Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.
Do you remember the prayers of the martyred saints from the Tribulation under the altar crying out for God to avenge them? I think these are those prayers. After the prayers have been consumed in the censer, the angel will take the empty censer, go back to the altar, fill it with fire, and hurl it down to the earth. God is about to avenge their deaths of the Tribulation Saints with fiery trials.
Verse 6 – So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepare themselves to sound.
Verse 7 – The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
And this fulfills the prophet Joel’s prophecy in Joel 2:30, 31 – “And I will show wonders in the heaven and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. (Verse 31) The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
When this happens, the loss of life will be horrendous, not to mention no grain for animals and no wood for housing.
With the massive loss of vegetation will come soil erosion, floods, mudslides. The atmosphere will fill with smoke making it hard to see or breathe.
Verse 8 – Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood;
Verse 9 – and a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
This “like a burning mountain,” is either a nuclear missile or a huge meteor. But whatever it is, it’s big, blazing hot, and caused a third of the sea to turn to blood.
Verse 10 – Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water,
Verse 11 – and the name of the star is Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood; and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.
You would think by now after all that has happened, people would gladly turn to Christ for salvation. Nope! they are still rebellious. With one-third of fresh water tainted, extreme thirst will set in. Adults will survive without water for about three days while the sick and infants will not.
Verse 12 – Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened; a third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.
How long this will continue is not said, but there is no question that a reduction in the earth’s sunlight will affect the weather. Crops, and life in general will be affected, multitudes will freeze to death.
Can there ever be any doubt of whom controls all of this. Some would rather curse God and die than to surrender to the One that can save!
Verse 13 – And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”
Some believe it couldn’t get any worse, oh, but it does. Would anyone, if they knew what was written, want to go through any of this and think they could survive? Some will though, and some won’t .
