Revelation – Chapter 9

Fifth Trumpet

Verse 1 – Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. And to him was given the key to the bottomless pit.

This star is an angel. He is not a “fallen angel,” nor Satan himself. God would not entrust the key to the “bottomless pit” to Satan, because it is the same angel in Revelation 20:1-3, that will bind Satan and cast him into the bottomless pit for a 1,000 years.

Verse 2 – And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. And the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit.

Verse 3 – Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

Just imagine a swarm of locusts, only these locusts are demons. They will have the ability to sting. These are fallen angels who joined Satan in his rebellion against God.

Verse 4 – They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green things, or any trees, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

Lucifer was created by God and then became Satan. God is the Creator of all things, but He did not create these angels to be evil. He created these angels with a free will to either serve Him or not, and they chose to follow Lucifer and rebel against God. But notice who still commands them, Almighty God does, not Satan.

Verse 5 – And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. And their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.

The Bible mentions, in the previous chapters, that the 144,000 Jews are the one s that are sealed, there may be others. However, these demons are not allowed to harm those with the seal of God on their forehead, only the ones not sealed.

The sting from a scorpion is very painful but not usually deadly. The venom affects the veins and nervous system. Normally the pain and discomfort last for several days. This pain from these demons lasts five months.

Verse 6 – In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

Can you imagine hurting so bad that you just want to die, but can’t? Or, can you imagine people choosing to go through this kind of torment rather than surrendering to Jesus?

Verse 7 – And the shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.

Verse 8 – They had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions teeth.

Verse 9 – And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle.

Verse 10 – They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. And their power was to hurt men five months.

Now we have a full description of what these deadly creatures look like. First, there are not just a few, they are too many to count, a swarm, just as locusts. They have the body of a horse, only with wings, they fly. Their tails swish back and forth and have a powerful sting that releases venom when they strike. They have the face of a man only with razor-sharp teeth like a lion. And they wear a breastplate made of iron to protect them from any kind of harm.

Verse 11 – And they had a king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.

Abaddon means destruction and Apollyon means destroyer. Most people underestimate the power of darkness. This king is one of the followers of Satan, he is not Satan. Keep in mind, Satan is at liberty on the earth and this king was confined with other demons.

Verse 12 – One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.

Sixth Trumpet

Verse 13 – Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

This is the altar described in Chapter 8. It is where the angel mixes the incense with the prayers of the Tribulation Saints. The mixture rises to God and kindles His wrath. Then the sixth angel will stand and sound his trumpet, and a voice will be heard coming from the horns of the altar that will speak for martyred saints.

Verse 14 – saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”

The Euphrates River first appears in Genesis. It was close to the Garden of Eden where Adam sinned and Cain slew Able. It is where the flood began, where the Tower of Babel stood, where Babylon was built, and where world government and world religion began. It has long been associated with astrology, idolatry, demon worship, witchcraft, and other sordid sins. It is also widely recognized as the boundary between East and West. The voice coming from the golden altar will tell the sixth angels to release these four angels that have been bound.

Verse 15 – So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind.

So far, millions have disappeared through the Rapture; next one-fourth, or more than a billion people that are left on earth will die when the horse called death was released; others will die from war, natural disasters, and poison waters; now another one – a third will die when these four angels are released.

Verse 16 – Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million, and I heard the number of them.

These four angels lead these two hundred million horsemen. I don’t believe this cavalry will be composed of ordinary men and horses.

Verse 17 – And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone.

This is a supernatural army of demons, which is not uncommon in Scripture, 2 Kings 6:13-17. When Jesus returns He will be accompanied by the Armies of Heaven, and it stands to reason that Satan has his armies. As awful as this is, it will not cause people to repent.

These four angels will be released in the exact year, month, day, and hour predetermined by God.

Verse 18 – By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed – by the fire and the smoke and brimstone which came out of their mouths.

Verse 19 – For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

Some think that John was describing tanks and a thermonuclear war. I think John described exactly what he saw; horses with lions heads and having serpents for tails with heads. Some like to speculate of why this army would be on horses. Keep in mind, these are not normal horses, they are demonic in nature, saved for the time of the Tribulation.

Verse 20 – But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk;

Those remaining on earth at this time will refuse to repent and continue to reject Jesus. Demon worship (Satanism) and idolatry will be prominent.

Verse 21 – and they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Demon worship and idolatry won’t be the only sins going full strength. There will be numerous murders, witchcraft being used, sexual immorality to a degree no one has ever seen, and people stealing, because there will be no respect for God’s law of any kind.

Do we not see all of these out in the open today, as if there is no law or God? I watched witches gather to place a curse on a nominee for the Supreme Court Justice. People have parades to flaunt their sexual immorality, with no regard for the coming judgment.

We think the world has gone”mad,” but its only a matter of time before the Church is out of here, and judgment will begin.
