If we understand what Satan’s greatest desire is, we can understand what warfare is all about. But, let’s start with:
What was Satan’s desire before his fall?
This is before the fall of man. This is when Satan was in heaven when his name was Lucifer and before the creation of the world. Satan made five “I will” statements and all of these statements have to do with being “lifted up,” being seen, being high.
Isaiah 14:12 – “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! (Verse 13) For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above all the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north;
(Verse 14) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ (Verse 15) Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.
God listed what was Satan’s heart desire; exalted, lifted up, high, worshipped, and like God the Most High. What’s hard to believe is that this is the nature that we are born with. Yes, we are born with a sin nature like Adam, but Adam was not the original sinner, Lucifer was. And that nature is “Look at me!”
Before we come to Christ, the most important person in our lives is us. Even after we are born again, we still have some residue of that nature. Example: Who is the first person you look for in a group picture?
However, when we become born again, we become like Christ and Christ is always turning the attention onto the Father or the Holy Spirit. But when the Holy Spirit comes He testifies about Jesus and the Father lifts up the Son! The more we become like Christ the more we want to focus the attention on Jesus.
Isaiah 14:11 – “Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, and the sound of your stringed instruments; The maggot is spread under you, and worms cover you.”
Isaiah 14 was a prophecy given to the king of Babylon, but we know that God is addressing Lucifer. God was speaking to the spirit behind the man. Remember when Jesus said to Peter, “Get behind me Satn.”? Jesus was talking to the spirit behind the man.
Now, here’s a prophecy given to the prince of Tyre: Ezekiel 28:11 – Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, (Verse 12) “Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. (Verse 13) You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: (The king of Tyre was never in Eden, so we know this is talking about Satan, the spirit behind the man.) The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.
(Verse 14) “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. (Verse 15) You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. (Verse 16) “By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones.”
The workmanship of your timbrels: Timbrels means a percussion instrument. And your “pipes,” wind instruments. Isaiah 14 says, “and your stringed instruments.” All musical instruments fall into one of these three categories. Lucifer was created with instruments in his body. He was to lead worship in heaven.
However, God then says Lucifer became violent by his “trading,” “merchandizing.” Merchandizing in Hebrew is when something is supposed to pass through one person’s hands and then to the rightful owner. But when the Scripture says “trading” in this verse, it was saying, “Lucifer kept some of the praise and worship for himself instead of it all passing to the rightful owner – God!”
That was Lucifer’s sin: He wanted to be worshipped. He felt like he deserved it and was entitled to it, but God said, “You’re out!” God did this so fast that Jesus said, “I saw Satan fall like lightning!”
Why? Because God is the only One worthy to be worshipped and Satan stole what didn’t belong to him! So Satan’s greatest desire was to be worshipped!
So what is Satan’s desire now?
Matthew 4:8 – Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the word and their glory. (Verse 9) And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
Satan tries to get even the Son of God to worship him, so his desire is still the same – to be worshipped! Not only did Satan want Jesus to worship him, but he wanted Him to express it by falling down in front of him in an act of worship.
Worship is always expressed. Love is always expressed also. If we love someone, we express it. If people can express their excitement about a ballgame, they certainly can get excited about being saved from an eternal hell. Satan doesn’t want us to express our love for God or anyone else for that matter. Satan not only wants to be worshipped but he wants to stop every person on this earth from worshipping God!
What will be Satan’s greatest desire in the future?
Revelation 13:4 – So they worshipped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshipped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”
Go read the Song of Moses in Exodus 15, where Marium sings a song and these two lines are in it: “Who is like our God? Who is able to make war with HIm?” (Exodus 15:11) However, in the end, times, people are singing this about Satan.
Revelation 17:13 – “These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Verse 14) “These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called chosen and faithful.”
In Lucifer’s description, the Bible says that he was covered with precious stones and precious stones reflect light. He was supposed to reflect the precious light to all of heaven.
Did you know we were created with instruments in our bodies? Stringed instruments – vocal cords. Wind instruments – wind passes through the vocal cords to make a sound. Percussion – we can clap with our hands. All these were created to worship the One True God! And the precious stones, we as the children of God are to reflect our precious King. God didn’t need Satan anymore to be a worship leader, He created man to worship Him!
