Is Hell a Real Place?

In the story of the rich man and Lazarus, in Luke chapter 16, there are actually two beggars. One begged in this life; the other begged in the next.

Christ’s teaching on hell verifies the extreme difference in eternity for the righteous and the ungodly. This teaching is not a condemnation of wealth; it is a condemnation of any person who rejects Jesus Christ.

Christ’s teaching also confirms that the believer’s before Calvary were carried by angels into Paradise. After Calvary the righteous go to heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:21-24; Revelation 6:9-11).

Hell is a place of eternal torment. When the unsaved go to hell, they are in a conscious state (Luke 16:23-28; Deuteronomy 32:22; 2 Samuel 22:6; Isiah 14:9-11).

Hell is a place without mercy. It is a place with no escape. When a person chooses to go to hell by rejecting Jesus Christ, all the prayers of 10 thousand saints cannot save them.

Souls are immortal in hell and heaven (Luke 16:22-32; 1 Peter 3:4; Luke 20:38; 2 Corinthians 5:8).

Hell is located in “the lower parts of the earth” (Psalm 63:9; Ephesians 4:8-10; Matthew 12:40).

Hell was made for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41).

Hell is not to be confused with the lake of fire. In this life the ungodly die and go to hell, where they wait until they are brought to the Great White Throne for final judgment before God and sentenced to the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20; 20:10, 14, 15).

I hope this clears up any misconception whether hell is areal place or not. “Don’t choose to go there!” God is a Mighty God! He sent His only beloved Son to take the penalty for yours and my sins on a cross and then rose to sit on the right hand of the Father. He loves you more than you could ever image, choose life!

Is Hell a Real Place

What Does Scripture Say About Hell?

First, who was hell originally created for? Matthew 25:41 says, “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. So we see from this scripture that hell was made for the devil and his angels, but look what verse 46 says: “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” These being those on the left will be there also.

So who are those on the left hand? Matthew 25:32, 33 says, “All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. (Verse 33) “And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

We know from reading the Bible that the sheep are those who follow Christ, the righteous. The goats are represented by the wicked that do not follow Christ, the lost. So the goats are put in the same category as the devil and his angels and will go into everlasting punishment with them.

Are there people in hell right now? Let’s see what scripture says. John 5:28, 29 says, “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice (Verse 29) and come forth – those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. Job 21:30 – For the wicked are reserved for the day of doom: they shall be brought out on the day of wrath. So the lost, are waiting for the Day of Judgment. More proof: Revelation 20:11, 12, 15 – (Verse 11) Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. (Verse 12) And I saw the dead, small, and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things, which were written in the books. (Verse 15) And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Does Everyone Live in Either Heaven or Hell Throughout All Eternity?

I know this is not a popular or pleasant subject, but this is why it is so important to make the decision to follow Christ while you still have breath!

In chapter 14 of the Book of Revelation, there will be “the beast” and an image that he sets up for all to worship. Revelation 14: 9-11 – (Verse 9) Then a third angel followed them (the other angels), saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, (Verse 10) he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and the presence of the Lamb. (Verse 11) “And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever, and they have no rest day and night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” There will be people who have to live through that horrible time of the 7-year tribulation, some will come to Christ, but many will follow the beast.

There will be some who say that this punishment is only for those who live during that time, but look what scripture says about all those who don’t follow Christ during their lifetime.

II Thessalonians chapter one, God is talking about tribulation for those who trouble the saints. II Thessalonians 1:8, 9 says, (Verse 8) in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Verse 9) These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from His glory of His power, (when He comes in that Day).

Matthew 13:40-42 – “Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. (Verse 41) “The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend and those who practice lawlessness, (Verse 42) “and will cast hem into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Mark 9:48 says the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. Matthew 25:46 – “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

The entire Bible points us to Christ, and that also tell us the consequences of those who don’t come to Him with their whole heart. Christianity is so much more than just saying, “I believe in God.” Even the devil and his angels know there is God and they must obey Him. When you come to Christ, there will be a transformation that takes place. He makes all things new. However, if you don’t read, study, and pray, you will never form a relationship and receive the mercy He has to offer. Our God is an awesome God who loves more than we could ever imagine and it is His desire for everyone to be with Him. He wants us to spend eternity with Him – “Choose Life!”
