Have you ever had another believer argue with you about what Scripture actually says, even after you show them the Scripture?
Spiritual Blindness and Spiritual Sight
It takes spiritual eyes to understand the Bible. However, people can have spiritual blindness to Scripture. Spiritual blindness steals our understanding. Isaiah 42:18 – “Hear, you deaf; and look, you blind, that you may see. (Verse 19) Who is blind but My servant, or deaf as My messenger whom I send? Who is blind as he who is perfect, and blind as the LORD’s servant? (If you think you already know everything the Bible says, you are blind.) (Verse 20) Seeing many things, but you do not observe; opening the ears, but he does not hear.”
Isaiah 43:8 – Bring out the blind people who have eyes, and the deaf who have ears.
Jeremiah 5:21 – ‘Hear this now, O foolish people, without understanding, who have eyes and see not, and who have ears and hear not:
Ezekiel 12:2 – “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear; for they are a rebellious house. (Rebellion also causes spiritual blindness.)
Zephaniah 1:17 – “I will bring distress upon men, and they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD; (Sin is another cause of spiritual blindness.)
In Matthew, Jesus ties spiritual blindness to a lack of understanding: Matthew 13:14 – “And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, and seeing you will see and not “perceive”; (Verse 15) For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart and turn, so that I should heal them.’
People have to be able to see with spiritual eyes and hear with spiritual ears so that, they will be able to understand God’s Word, so they can turn, so that He can heal them. The reason so many people are not “spiritually healed”, is because they don’t turn from their sin; the reason they don’t turn from their sin is because they don’t understand what the sin is doing to them. They are spiritually blind and deaf. Being spiritually blind causes people to remain spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally sick! God’s Word will change people’s heart. God’s Word is the only thing that will heal us.
Have you ever read a chapter in the Bible, and when you finished, you had no idea what you just read? Yep, me too. This also happens in the “natural.” We can be looking right at something or someone, and not see it or them. Our mind is somewhere else.
Pride Causes Spiritual Blindness
We covered rebellion and sin, and the only reason a person will continue to sin, is because they are an arrogant person. Pride is at the root.
Jesus heals a blind man in John Chapter 9. He’s blind from birth. No one had ever healed a blind man from birth. Jesus heals this man and the Pharisees get mad about it. John 9:39 – And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into the world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.” (Verse 40) Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?” (Verse 41) Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.”
In other words, Jesus is saying, “I came into this world so that those who are spiritually blind could receive their sight.” And, “Those of you who say that they can see without Me, don’t need Me, and you will be made blind to My words.” In Verse 41, Jesus told the Pharisees, that if they would admit that they are blind, He would forgive their sin.
If people would just admit they are blind without Christ, He will take care of their sin problem by wiping it out! But since the Pharisees said they could see without Him, they remained in their sin! That is a stubborn, rebellious, heart that is full of pride. If they continue to do things “their” way, they will remain in their sin.
These next two Scriptures have to be looked at with spiritual eyes: Isaiah 4:1 – And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, “We will eat our own food and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by your name, to take away our reproach.”
When I first read this, I said, “What? I have no idea what this passage means.” But over the years listening to very intelligent pastors that have spiritual eyes, and studying on my own, I think I have a good idea what this means.
If you haven’t read the previous writing that I did on “Symbols,” I suggest you do so now. Take the seven women in this passage, and in the Book of Revelation and there are seven Churches. Churches are called “women” in some places in the Bible, because we are the Bride of Christ. Those seven churches in Revelation represent the “end time” church.
Here is what Isaiah 4:1 is saying: In that day, in the end time church, I will take hold of “one man.” That One Man is Jesus. They will say, “We will eat our own food (we will teach our own doctrine) and “wear our own apparel” – their own righteousness. This is a worldly church.
In the end times the “worldly church” is going to take hold of Jesus, but they are going to teach their own lessons and teach their own righteousness built on their own goodness, in their own eyes. However, they want to be called a church of Jesus Christ, and that should be good enough. It’s a fake church. This church is full of “Pride!” They do not teach the clear gospel and have let sin run rampant in the church. They will not teach repentance and a changed life because they don’t want to offend anyone. How much of the true gospel do you think you are going to learn in a church that has a declared homosexual teaching you from God’s Word?
Here is another Scripture that has to be read with spiritual eyes: Leviticus 26:26 – When I have cut off your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall bring back to you your bread by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.
Keep in mind, bread represents God’s Word. So, in that day, when you turn away from Me, He will “cut off” your supply of bread, His Word. And when He cuts off His word, ten women, ten churches, are going to prepare a lesson that will be sent out to all the churches to learn by. They will dish out one little lesson at a time what they want you to learn. What do you think “Sunday School lessons are? It is a little bit of God’s Word, dished out little by little to thousands of churches. The sad part is that some people get no more of God’s Word than what is dished out on Sunday mornings. In the end times, there will be a one world church that teaches everyone the same thing and God’s Word will dry up.
Jesus Opens Blind Eyes
Mark 8:22 – Then He came to Bethesda; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. (Verse 23) So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. (Verse 24) And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” (Verse 25) Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly.
I have heard too many pastors using this passage to say that your healing doesn’t always work the first time. Are you kidding me? This is the Son of God and He can’t heal a blind man the first time He touches him? That is not what this passage is saying at all. God always gets it right the first time! These pastors are not reading this with “Spiritual Eyes!”
There has to be a reason for Jesus putting His hands on this man twice because He does everything for a reason. When Jesus put His hand with the spit on the man, He said, “What do you see?” And the man said, “I see men like trees, walking.” In Psalm 1:2, 3 it says that the man who meditates on the word of God, shall be like “a tree planted by the rivers of water.” There are many places, including the New Testament, in the Bible, that “trees” represent people.
Here is how simple this passage really is: When Jesus put His hands on him the first time, He opened the man’s “spiritual eyes.” When He put His hands on him the second time, He opened his “natural eyes!”
Always remember, the Bible will define and interpret itself. In order to see this, we have to back up to the chapter where Jesus feeds four thousand and right after He feeds all these people we see in Mark 8:13 – And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. (Verse 14) Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. (Verse 15) Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” (Verse 16) So they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
The disciples had “spiritual blindness.” They thought Jesus was upset with them because they hadn’t brought enough bread. Jesus was talking about the “teachings,” “words,” of the Pharisees. (Verse 17) And Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? (Verse 18) “Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? (Verse 19) “When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven” (Verse 21) So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?”
In other words; “Fellows, if I just wanted “bread,” I’d whip us up some bread!” The disciples are like us a lot of the time when we are trying to understand the meaning of Scripture. We must have “Spiritual Eyes.” If we don’t read God’s Word with spiritual eyes, we won’t understand it, and if we don’t understand it, we will not turn from our sin, and if we don’t turn from our sin, our sin will remain in us. You will never be healed.
So, we ask God to open our spiritual eyes in order to understand this spiritual book, written by a Spiritual Being, our God!
